Opulent Ottoman – Chaise…A Pure Purple Delight!

???????????????????????????????  So, here it is…most the of the upholstery work is    now complete!

Just need to attach the hinges, wax up the legs and  do the braid inside the box and then it’s all done!

It’s been a long haul but worth it in the end…Once she’s fully finished I’ll post some before and after shots.

Sewing, Piping, Shaping, Fitting, Hand-Stitching – Very Patiently!!

???????????????????????????????Can’t believe it’s been so long…

So here’s the latest,  completed fixing the top fabric onto the back of the ottoman/chaise and fitted the side edges of the chaise back piece.

This required a sandwich of felt and poly wadding to soften and smooth all the different converging edges.

I made a template of the shape for cutting purposes and then fitted the piece temporarily, thus allowing the shape to be manipulated until I was happy and then the piping was pinned on.

I’ve made the single piping to dress the edges and I am now hand-stitching the side pieces and piping so that it’s all securely fixed.

On the seat or box top, the lining has been completed too, one long edge was stapled using back-stripping tape and all the other edges were hand-stitched.

It’s getting very close to finishing, so need to get a braid to finish all the internal box seams/joins.

Devils in the Delicate Details – That Take Time!!

DSC01321I’ve been working on lots of tricky sections on the chaise back – and it’s been very time-consuming.

I have completed the side edges, creating a tidy fan of pleats on the head roll, the pleats were pinned in place and then tacked down…it can be an awkward job – I managed to hammer a tack into my finger! OOOUCH – LOL! Really NOT recommended!!

Next job, is to work on the back section. starting at the top fixing the hessian base, a polyester wadding sandwich and the top fabric. I used some back-tacking card to hold this firmly in place. Then its fixing on the sides and the bottom…involving lots of hand stitching!

Once the back is done, I’ll do the side sections…in the meantime I need to decide how I want to finish the seam edges, could be piping, cord or braid…ooooh the choices!

A Chaise of Extravagance and Elegance…Lounging Back is…’Oh So Close’!!…

DSC01134It’s a busy time of year…So, back to the task in hand, otherwise I’ll never get to lounge back on this Chaise/Ottoman!

All the buttons are now secured into place, the next step has been to pull and stretch the top + bottom ends and the sides of the chaise back piece…

Crease pleats have been followed down from the top and bottom rows to create a neat line from each button and fabric has been pulled tightly and tacked in place.

The sides have been pulled and crease pleats made from buttons closest to the edge.

The roll edges need to have a neat fan of pleats and be secured down, then I’ll get to work on the sides and the back of the chaise.

But with the holiday time fast approaching it might be a few weeks before I get to that! So, enjoy your seasonal festivities and I’ll back in the New Year!

Chaise Back – All Buttoned Up! Looking Gorgeous and Luxurious!

Testing and busy times! But all for a good cause!

Finally got down with the deep buttoning, which is rather hard word in truth, but once there is a rhythm it gets easier.

Started at the top middle and worked my way round forming my first diamond half and spread from that to the sides, pulling the buttons through and securing them at back in a bow with the help of some calico so these could be adjusted once all the buttons were in position.

Once I was happy, the buttons were pulled tightly in place and secured with a slip knot and then double-tied.

And I’m so happy with the result and another new skill acquired!

It’s all coming together…a little slower than planned but the results speak for themselves!

Diamonds are Forever…Diamonds are Decadent…And Diamonds are Here!

It’s all been going diamond-shaped!!

Completed a lot of hand stitching on the internal lining and on the external corners of the ottoman box. Phew that’s an awkward and a time-consuming job out of the way!

I’ve been working on the chaise back, measuring out the deep button placements, creating a luxury look with a diamond pattern – in rows of 4/5 button places. Initially I didn’t do any measuring,  I placed pins to give me an idea of spaces for the deep-buttoning to decide the best shape & size of the diamond pattern – when I was happy, I measured it all out precisely.

Next job was to mark out the button places and cut through the calico in a cross, creating enough space to chisel through the wadding and the foam. After completing that, thanks to an apple corer (!), it was on with a cotton felt layer to give it a softer feel and then poly wadding immediately on top.

It’s now ready for the lush top cover…that’ll be in next weeks installment!!
